Cardinal Sir John Ribat speaks out against experimental seabed mining
The world’s first project to mine the seabed for minerals is expected to begin operations in Papua New Guinea in 2019. Experimental in nature, this mining ventured by Canadian company Nautilus Minerals is in charge of the Solwara 1 project located in the Bismarck Sea (approximately 30 kilometers from the coast of New Ireland and 50 kilometers from the coast of East New Britain. There have been reports of impacts from exploratory mining in the area affecting indigenous coastal communities of the Bismarck Sea.
In this Voices from the Last Frontier documentary, His Eminence, Cardinal Sir John Ribat calls for a ban on experimental seabed mining in PNG and the Pacific.
