West Aucklanders are being warned mining companies have their sights on the seabed.
Kiwis Against Seabed Mining is holding a public meeting at Muriwai Fire Station this evening.
Spokesman Tim Rainger says there are applications to mine iron ore all the way from South Taranaki, to Cape Reinga.
He says the first consent would allow the taking of three to five million tonnes of ore per year, meaning 10 times that would be disturbed.
“The environmental impacts in particular are completely unknown. This is a project which has no precedence and scale anywhere in the world.”
Tim Rainger says if the resource consents were to be granted, they’d be the biggest scale seabed mine anywhere in the world.
